Creating Brave Spaces: Evaluating a Simulation-based Faculty Development Curriculum on Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity
Dr. Catherine Tong, Associate Clinical Professor, Dept of Family Medicine & MERIT Faculty Fellow
Dr. Sandra Monteiro, Associate Professor, Dept of Medicine & MERIT Scientist
Equity, diversity, inclusion and indigenous reconciliation (EDIIR) curriculum is an area where health professions teachers share a high level of interest but a low level of comfort. While faculty developers prepare teachers to engage in and lead these conversations with their learners, team members and patients, a disconnect still exists between the workshop environment and the “real world” environment.
Simulation-based education has been demonstrated to improve knowledge, confidence, and performance in health professional education including skill development in intrinsic roles. This project answers the following question: can simulation-based education design be effectively deployed in health professional faculty development curriculum to address EDIIR objectives?
To do this, we will design and implement a simulation-based curriculum for EDIIR objectives and generate evidence that it can be effectively implemented in health professional faculty development through a realist evaluation.
