Beyond individual learning: systems learning and translational educational outcomes using healthcare simulation
Dr. James Leung (MD, FRCPC, CHSE)
Our current era of high-quality healthcare emphasizes training of high-functioning teams and design of safe, effective systems of care, over the performance of individual healthcare providers. While traditionally conceptualized as an educational method, healthcare simulation has evolved into a tool for team and system learning. It allows teams to work together to learn together, and for systems to gain experience without risking harm to patients. In this sense, healthcare simulation has also evolved into an intervention itself, with translatable effects on patient outcomes. In this talk, we will review both the evidence and our experiences using healthcare simulation for team and systems learning. It will be relevant for all healthcare education scholars in expanding the scope of our work from “classroom to bedside”.
Dr. James Leung is a simulation educator, researcher, and leader at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON, Canada. He serves as Assistant Dean of the Centre for Simulation Based Learning (CSBL) and Assistant Professor in Pediatric Emergency Medicine practicing at McMaster Children’s Hospital. His work focuses on using healthcare simulation to improve emergency care for children, enhancing interprofessional continuing education, and expand simulation access in low-resource areas using distance simulation. Dr. Leung is a Chief Developer of the Virtual Resuscitation Room, co-lead for the ImPACTS-Canada Pediatric Simulation Outreach Network, and Associate Editor for Simulation & Gaming.
