About the Presentation:
Canadian medical education stakeholders and data stewards across Canada share the common goal of a self-regulating health human resource and healthcare system that is effective in constantly meeting the evolving healthcare needs of all persons who access it. These entities collect considerable data, which have potential to support this goal but that are rarely used beyond their pre-specified purposes or linked across periods of training and practice. To realize the promise of inter-institutional data-driven research, it is necessary to establish ethical approaches to sharing inter-institutional education data for research. In this presentation, we detail the outcomes of a pan-Canadian consensus project aimed at distilling agreement on best practices for harnessing medical education big data. The findings highlight a shared set of values and principles, which provide direction to researchers as they embark on new data-driven inquiry.
About the Presenters:
Dr. Lawrence Grierson is Associate Professor with the Department of Family Medicine (DFM), Scientist with the McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences’ Program for Educational Research, Innovation, and Theory (MERIT), and Assistant Dean of the Health Sciences Education (HSED) Graduate Program at McMaster University. Lawrence leads the FSG Med Ed Research Lab (www.fsgmededlab.com)
Dr. Kulamakan (Mahan) Kulasegaram is an Associate Professor and Scientist at the University of Toronto. He leads a program of research in harnessing the power of assessment to enhance the experience of learners, the curricula of schools, and the outcomes that can impact the system. He is a graduate of McMaster University and completed his tour of duty at PERD.
