Insight U is a community of practice for simulation-based learning in health care. The meeting is currently coordinated by Dr. Sandra Monteiro, Director of Scholarship at the CSBL and Scientist with MERIT. At each meeting, local simulation scholars gather to discuss innovations or research related to the use of simulation technology to improve teaching and learning in health care. Please consider sharing your work with us to help strengthen this community and share ideas and resources.
The lead discussant is Dr. James Leung, Assistant Professor, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM), McMaster University
Translational Outcomes in Simulation. Results from the Improving Pediatric Acute Care Through Simulation (IMPACTS) Collaborative
The vast majority of children with medical emergencies present to their nearest, community General Emergency Department (GED) rather than specialized Pediatric Emergency Departments (PED). Evidence suggests that children seen in GED are more likely to experience gaps in care compared to PED, including: unnecessary diagnostic tests, provision of ineffective medications, greater resources utilization and deviation from practice guidelines. To narrow these gaps in care, the main strategy advocated by North American Pediatric, and Emergency Medicine societies has been to improve the “preparedness” of GEDs in caring for children. Within this strategy, outreach simulations, whereby PED specialists travel to partner GED sites to conduct in-situ simulations have been a key education intervention. The Improving Pediatric Acute Care Through Simulation (ImPACTS) collaborative is a network of 36 PED and over 100 GED significantly centered at Yale University focused on outreach simulations to improve pediatric readiness. ImPACTS has produced multiple publications establishing the utility of outreach simulations, and is now focused on studying how to sustain, refine, expand this practice to improve pediatric readiness of GEDs.
Dr. Leung is the Director of Simulation for the Division of PEM, MERIT member, Co-lead for the ImPACTS-Canada Pediatric Simulation Outreach Network, a Chief Pediatric Developer for the Virtual Resuscitation Room, and an Associate Editor for Simulation & Gaming. Dr. Leung’s simulation interests include faculty development, continuing healthcare education, debriefing, outreach simulation/education to improve pediatric preparedness in community EDs, and improving equity of access of simulation education to low-resource and remote areas.
