Why and How are the Design Possibilities for Mixed Methods Limitless?
Dr. Cheryl Poth
Health professional education research can benefit from a mixed methods approach yet making design decisions can be difficult given the limitless possibilities. We examine the multiple ‘entry’ points for mixed methods designs and discuss specific strategies for helping researchers navigate the key decisions necessary for creating a coherent study design.
Cheryl Poth, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Centre for Research and Applied Measurement and Evaluation at the University of Alberta. She is an award-winning author of four research-focused textbooks and editor of the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Mixed Methods Research Design. She was a founding board member and President of the Mixed Methods International Research Association. She has delivered mixed-methods research keynotes, invited talks, short courses, and workshops on four continents and across Canada and the US. Her health-related studies are published in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, BMC Health Service, Academic Medicine, and Medical Teacher.
