What can mixed methods offer health researchers?

We find many examples of how insights gleaned from the integration of qualitative and quantitative perspectives can be useful in health research. What is less familiar are the key characteristics that distinguish mixed methods research from other approaches. Mixed methods research requires unique knowledge and skills in many areas in order to accomplish the requisite integration and evidence expected in proposals and reports. We will examine why mixed methods research is optimal for solving many of our pressing health-related societal issues and how health researchers can begin designing mixed methods research and avoid common pitfalls.

Cheryl Poth, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Centre for Research and Applied Measurement and Evaluation at the University of Alberta. She is an award-winning author of four research-focused textbooks and editor of the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Mixed Methods Research Design. She was a founding board member and President of the Mixed Methods International Research Association. She has delivered mixed-methods research keynotes, invited talks, short courses, and workshops on four continents and across Canada and the US. Her health-related studies are published in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, BMC Health Service, Academic Medicine, and Medical Teacher.
