Title: The Immediate and Delayed Impacts of Patient Death during Residency
Patient death is an inevitability of medical training. Early trainees often feel underprepared to manage death. Our team aimed to ascertain the impacts of patient death, debriefing opportunities, and coping strategies employed by residents at McMaster University. A qualitative approach was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 resident physicians at McMaster University. The impacts of patient death on participants were categorized as immediate and delayed. Immediate impact of patient death includes emotional distress such as feelings of guilt, psychological shock, sadness, and fear. Delayed impact include decreased empathy, compassion, and a sense of detachment. This MERIT session will focus on the thematic analysis of our data, how our framework impacts the understanding of the underlying problem, and to discuss any methodological limitations.
