Conference will rethink clinical reasoning

Roughly 120 clinicians, patient advocates, students and research managers will attend the ReThink Clinical Reasoning Conference hosted by McMaster University on Feb. 16.

The online conference aims to combat rising rates of errors in clinical reasoning by reforming traditional methods and working towards a more inclusive approach that organizers say will help bring about new solutions.

To this end, the conference will examine four themes impacting clinical reasoning, those of technology, health systems, social justice and education. ReThink is drawing in an international audience to share ideas about improving health-care equity through knowledge translation and implementation science.

“The future of clinical reasoning requires an interdisciplinary, multicultural, decolonized version of medicine and clinical reasoning,” said organizer Sandra Monteiro, associate professor in the Department of Medicine, in a video promoting the conference.

“The way that we think about clinical reasoning is broken. Join us for this journey.”

Nearly half of those registered for the ReThink conference are from outside Canada, including attendees from the United States, Spain, Britain, Holland, Chile, Oman and Pakistan. The bulk of those attending will be clinicians specializing in medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, pharmacology, pathology and occupational therapy.

Participants may enter a research seed grant competition sponsored by the McMaster Education Research Innovation and Theory (MERIT) program for a maximum of $6,000. The winners can use the grant to research improvements in clinical reasoning.

Prices vary according to the category of registrants. It is free for patient advocates, $35 for students and trainees, $125 for other participants and finally a ‘pay it forward’ option of $275.
